As we celebrate 250 years of independence, we reflect that for much of that history, the freedoms being celebrated did not belong to us. Women organized, sacrificed, and refused to be silent so we could vote, own property, enter boardrooms, and demand protection under the law. This anniversary, while a major one, is not about fireworks. It is about knowing what the fireworks cost.
Here in the Upper Keys, women continue to balance careers and children, aging parents and household demands, personal ambition and the expectations placed on us before we were old enough to name them. We have done it quietly and brilliantly, and we do it better together.
That is exactly what EMPOWER YOU proved. More than 100 women gathered this spring for a day built around powerful speakers, resources directed at women, and a keynote who reminded us that ceilings only hold if you stop pushing. Nine of those women joined BPW as a result.
What they found — and what every member knows — is that the most powerful thing about BPW is the moment you realize you can turn to the woman beside you and say, “I need help,” and she will be there. A trusted voice, a steady presence, a referral, a lunch that turns into a lifeline. That is not a small thing. That is the whole thing.
