We've all had seasons in our lives where everything seems to be happening at once and some things just have to wait their turn.
Waiting our turn is something women are familiar with.
Whether you're waiting for a bathroom stall in a busy ladies' room... waiting for the kids to go to bed... waiting in the doctor's office for your appointment to begin... or waiting for a call back from a job interview... waiting can be downright annoying at best.
At worst, waiting can come with a real cost: time; money; opportunities to grow as individuals, families and communities; and even our own health and safety.
Here are two things that I personally think a woman shouldn’t have to wait for:
- The opportunity to continue her education in pursuit of career goals.
- Access to a safe and comfortable place when her life is at risk.
I’m so proud that our Upper Keys BPW has been bringing down the wait time for women in both of these cases!
Through our Adult Women's Scholarship Program, we help local women remove the financial barrier that often stands in the way of attaining the education and credentials they need to move forward in their careers. We've been awarding scholarships twice a year for many years now, and we'll do it again next month. The application window is open now through next Tuesday, April 15. (Apply here.)
In the second case, I’m excited to announce that very soon we will deliver a $10,000 check to the Domestic Abuse Shelter of the Florida Keys (DAS)! Raised with your help through our "Give Hope a Home" campaign, the money will be used to create a business center at a facility currently being renovated to provide emergency shelter for Middle and Upper Keys survivors. Once completed, the new shelter will drastically reduce the wait time for local women and families in need of a safe place to lay their heads.
When we say our Upper Keys BPW strives to support women at every stage of their lives, we mean every stage.
From the most dangerous times, when we’re experiencing threats of violence in our own homes, to the most promising times, when we decide to invest in our education and training, empowered women empower women.
So let's keep these lines moving, shall we? Please spread the word about our scholarships to women you know who have been 'waiting' for just this kind of boost. And 'save the date' to attend our May 21 luncheon where we will present our "Give Hope a Home" donation to DAS. (Look for details to come via email soon.)
