Bubbles on the Bay

Due to issues beyond our control our Bayside & Bubbles Cruise was landlocked...but a good time was had by all anyway!

Many thanks to Ilja Chapman of Cruise Planners for organizing and hosting this event last month at Amoray Dive Resort.

And thanks to The Weekly newspaper for putting our event on the front page.

President's Message

Board elections are set for April 19 meeting

It's that time of the year for BPW -- election of our 2017-18 Board of Directors.

I'm so grateful for all of our members that continue to support the Upper Keys Business & Professional Women through your membership. We could not exist without it.

Coming together monthly and welcoming all who attend our events is the highlight of serving as your president. I've met so many wonderful women in BPW, not to mention how much I've learned from each of you.

On Wednesday, we'll not only be learning a wealth of information from Marlo DeMoss on financial planning but we will also be taking nominations and holding elections at our luncheon.

Please consider joining us on the board. We each have something different to offer and the extra participation (4-6 hours a month) will enrich your experience in BPW, I promise.

For our club to continue empowering women in the community, we need your assistance and involvement.

Connection makes us stronger.

Thank you for a stupendous event last month at Amoray. We didn't get to cruise the bay, but we did have lots of meaningful discussions and great fun, not to mention a brilliant sunset.

Thank you, Ilja Chapman of Cruise Planners, for the location and all the bubbles and snacks. It was a great success for our women's scholarship fund.

Next month we'll be installing our new BPW Board at Corks & Curds from 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 17. I can't wait to try this place out. I've heard so many great reviews. I hope you'll join us.

Can't wait to see you all at the Holiday Inn Wednesday!

bpw|MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Christine Lauterborn

I grew up in Los Angeles where my first business experience was in bookkeeping and office management, an excellent beginning to running any type of business.

In 1974, I moved to the U.S. Virgin Islands where the natural beauty drew me to becoming a freelance photographer, which led to studio camera person for the PBS affiliate, learning all aspects of TV production.

My husband and business partner, Frank Hurt, and I started Mountain Video Associates in 1980 - a high end, independent video production company where I produced videos, wrote scripts, edited video and sound.

Our productions included documentaries, commercials, TV programming and retail DVDs. We worked with many notables such as National Geographic, The Smithsonian Institute, Walter Cronkite, Good Morning America, Sony, and most recently Norwegian Cruise Lines. Our work took us to five continents and 30 countries.

At the inception of Ihe internet we began building websites, first for our own company, then for other small businesses. In 2008, we created Keystroke Media LLC, which encompassed video production and small business website development.

As our business prospered, it allowed me to go back to school part time (at age 45), earning a bachelor's degree in nursing science. Most of my RN experience was as case manager in the hospice setting, which was often difficult but also very rewarding, as most nursing is!

After 40 years in the Lesser Antilles, we semi retired to Tavernier in 2014. This is the closest we could remain to the Caribbean yet have access to better health care.

I now volunteer for the Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice of the Florida Keys. And Keystroke Media is still designing and developing small business websites.

My spare time passions: tennis, walking, reading and political activism.
