Look who won Woman and Business of the Year!

BPW Connection | November 2016

Congrats to Woman, Business of the Year!

We are so pleased to announce the winners of Business and Woman of the Year.

Our own president, Laura Maupin, was chosen as Woman of the Year. Business of the Year was a tie between Good Health Clinic and Island Time Trolley.

Shown here are (from left) Gina Boilini, Upper Keys BPW past president and chairman of the committee; Jeanne Harstad Austin, accepting the Business of the Year Award for Island Time Trolley; Kate Banick, with her Business of the Year Award for Good Health Clinic; and Laura Maupin.

Don't they all look positively radiant?

Great job, ladies, and again hats off to all who were nominated. It's quite an honor.

The awards were announced at last month's wildly successful Political Forum.

 Don't forget our upcoming meeting!

President's Message

So much to be grateful for this November!

Wow, what an outstanding Political Forum we hosted last month. Over a hundred guests and candidates attended and enjoyed.

Thank you to Audra Hill, Margie Smith, Gina Boilini and our fantastic Board of Directors. The teamwork was synergistic!

And a big giant congrats to Good Health Clinic and Island Time Trolley, our tying Business of the Year winners!

I could not be more grateful for the recognition as your Woman of the Year. I was honored to even be nominated, and being awarded was surreal!

Thank you Upper Keys BPW members.

As most of you know, I'm not a conventional business woman; never have been. BPW found me a little over 3 years ago because of a home-based business.

I was looking to share skincare. What I found was a fellowship of women connecting and empowering one another. It's been a joy getting to know each of you and I hope we will continue to attract women looking for the same.

It's rare in our world to truly connect and grow as a group, but I think we're doing just that each month.

And this month we'll be learning too! Katharine Becker of the Everglades Science Center will be joining us to share scientific findings of our precious waters.

Bring a friend. Share BPW. Connection & awareness make us stronger.

Also be sure to save the date of Wednesday, Dec. 21 as we come together in the home of our longtime BPW member, Della Wheaton and celebrate the holidays with a potluck and "tacky ornament" exchange. So much fun each year.

Happy Gratitude Month to you all. See you at the luncheon.  Don't forget your canned goods for the raffle prize!

bpw|member SPOTLIGHT

Vicky Fay

I moved to the Keys in September of 1997, and in October attended the BPW Expo. I still remember how excited I was to find a professional woman’s organization in the Keys (Thanks Pam Martin and Patricia Mull).

Then I started Tropical Business Services that provides business services, and I just celebrated 10 years as the Clerk with the Key Largo Fire Rescue & Emergency Services District.

Tropical also provides advertising/marketing services including selling custom-printed promotional products imprinted with your business logo. We have access to thousands of different types of promotional products including: Koozies, drinkware, pens, keychains and t shirts. Our mission is to promote the success of our clients’ business!

In 2006 the Upper Keys BPW selected Tropcial Business Services as Business of the Year. In 2008, I expanded the business and purchased Sunshine Printing, which has now been providing printing services to the Keys for over 32 years.

Our goal is to provide great customer service and superior quality-printed products! To see more about our services visit our website www.floridakeysprinting.com.

I am a member of BPW, which is very close to my heart, and my passion is Voices for Florida Keys Children where I am an Advisory Council board member. Voices provides the financial support for children involved in the Guardian Ad Litem Program.

I am the treasurer for the Upper Keys Republican Club and a member of the Republican Executive Committee of Monroe County. Sunshine Printing also is a member of the Key Largo, Islamorada and Ocean Reef chambers of commerce.

I am active in the community and am a graduate of the Monroe County Citizen’s Police Academy Class V (2015) and Leadership Monroe Class XIII (2006), and past BPW board member, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Crimewatch Captain, president and treasurer of Key Largo Village, treasurer of the Island of Key Largo Federation of Homeowner Associations, and a member of the Community Development Block Grant Committee.

It has been an exciting year with many challenges, and it is great to be involved in such a wonderful community. It is always challenging to grow your business and I am thrilled our business has grown!

Jim and I just celebrated our 22nd anniversary together and I have three beautiful granddaughters. Stevie is in the Air Force and just went to Iraq, Holly is at the San Francisco Academy of the Arts, and Scarlett just graduated high school.

Before moving to the Keys, I was a consultant in Information and Records Management in the nuclear industry.

With my skin, I have never been a “sun bunny” but I do enjoy diving, fishing, going to the movies, reading and playing cards.

Many thanks to long-time BPW member Della Wheaton for once again hosting our holiday party. Here's a photo from last year. You're the best, Della! (For the one or two who don't know Della -- yet -- she's in the center of the third row up from the front.)

Upper Keys BPW sends our love and well wishes to long-time member and Director, Pam Martin as she recovers from hip surgery.
