President's Message

This past Tuesday it seemed like it was Election Day almost everywhere else in the country except here, am I right?!

It reminded me that even when we’re not voting, we need to keep learning about and working for policies that help working women: our employment, our families, our health and our community.

Remember, the Upper Keys Business and Professional Women (BPW) is a nonpartisan organization that serves working women holistically at every stage of their lives through a unique combination of personal support & connectionprofessional development, and policy advocacy.

When it comes to advocacy, we look to the BPW/Florida Public Policy Platform, a blueprint for our work in respect, justice, and equality for working women.

Every year we review this platform here in the Upper Keys and join in a statewide discussion to make sure it reflects women’s evolving needs and concerns.

The 2023-2024 BPW/Florida Public Policy Platform includes:

  1. Economic Equity, Opportunity and Self-Sufficiency
  2. Health Care
  3. Voting Rights and Access

Each of these includes a number of specific issues. They affect working women differently and are by no means the only policy areas that affect women. But they’re a great place to start if you’re interested in advocacy to support working women.

Whenever I talk about one of these topics with a friend, family member or fellow BPW member, I’m struck by how differently we can see things and still have so much in common when it comes to wanting a better life for women in the Keys, in Florida across the country and beyond!

If this little Election Week policy refresher has inspired you at all, I hope you’ll join this evening’s online presentation with Emma Haydocy, Florida Policy Manager at Surfrider Foundation (and Upper Keys BPW member). She’ll be sharing inner workings of our Florida state legislature and how to impact state policies.

You might even be interested in joining the BPW/Florida in a 'lobby days' trip to Tallahassee in December (see Opportunities below).

Whether you want to make your voice heard on the BPW/Florida Public Policy Platform issues or another policy important to you, let’s keep learning so we can keep empowering working women to reach their full potential.

Warm regards,

Jill
