President's Message

It’s the end of the summer and SO HOT I didn’t think I had the energy to come up with a deep inspirational story for the newsletter this month.

But then last Sunday more than twenty BPW and LWV members went to see the Barbie movie together here in Tavernier and it was the best day ever.

So much pink and popcorn and booing the patriarchy together!

Afterward we took the cute picture below and got busy talking about the movie. Some of us absolutely loved it while others thought it was fun but not earth-shattering. And then there were people like me who enjoyed the entertainment value but needed a bit more time to process and ponder the deeper messages.

Since then, one aspect of the movie I keep coming back to is how many different Barbies there were.

Apparently each Barbie in the movie is based on a real doll. They reflected so many different occupations and kinds of women, personally and professionally. President Barbie! Writer Barbie! Dr. Barbie! And yes, even Mermaid Barbie!

I loved seeing how each Barbie was brought to life with her own special wardrobe and workplace.

Yet it was only when they worked together to save their community that the Barbies regained the power they needed to truly thrive.

So I started to think: Maybe BPW is kind of like Barbieland!

  • Each of us has our unique history, current work and future aspirations.
  • We are cute and strong and great role models for people around us.
  • We support each other and have fun doing it!
  • Our world changes and demands more of us sometimes.
And just like the Barbies, each of us grows stronger when we work together.

Our Board of Directors has a day-long retreat this Saturday. We'll bringing all our talents and resources to plan the next year's worth of events, programs and activities. And we're gonna need some help.

Want to play Hospitality Barbie or Marketing Barbie or Scholarship Committee Barbie with BPW?!?  Let me know!

Warm regards,

Jill

And in case you missed it...

Our Monthly Luncheon on July 19 overlooked the beautiful Whale Harbor sandbar from Harbor Events in Islamorada.

If you weren't one of the 40+ members, guests and visitors with us that day, you might have heard the buzz about how terrific the talk was.

Patricia Milian taught us how to overcome unconscious bias to forge real connections with people who are different from us. As one participant said, "It was excellent. The combination of the stories, and the connection with the brain, were very valuable….Thanks for a very insightful program." And Patricia has graciously shared a copy of her slides with all of us -- click here to view or download.

Thank you to ComplyRight for their sponsorship of this event.

Opportunities!

Join a committee

If you'd like to get more involved with Upper Keys BPW, consider joining or chairing a committee!

Our new Board will be meeting soon to plan out the upcoming year, using results from the recent Member Survey. We'll be looking for volunteers to serve on local committees, especially Membership, Scholarship, Marketing, Hospitality.

The more members who volunteer to help out, the more great events and benefits we can bring you, and the more we can do to help all of the working women in our community. Plus it's a wonderful way to meet other members, contribute to the community and make the most of your membership.

Click here to learn more about different committees, including responsibilities and time commitment needed.

Contact Jill at bpwupperkeys@gmail.com for more information.
